| Entrance to Yasukuni Shrine, the central Japanese site in Japan to honor the war dead, but also a remnant of prewar militarism and imperialism, for which Yasukuni Shrine was a major pillar. The Yasukuni Jinja was founded as a Shinto shrine in 1869 for the worship of the divine spirits of those persons who sacrificed themselves for their country. The chrysanthemun at the entrance is symbolic of the close relationship of the Shrine to the Imperial House of Japan and prewar state shinto. |
