| Saigo Takamori (1828-1877), one of the leaders of the anti-Shogunate movement in the 1850s and 1860s. After the foundation of the Meiji state 1868, he turned against the modernization policies of the government and died leading a rebellion against the Tokyo government in 1877. The picture shows him leading the attack on Kumamoto Castle at the beginning of the "Satsuma Rebellion" (or Soutwest War), which was unsuccesful. Saigo had to retreat to Kagoshima later and committed suicide after the defeat of his troops. |
